What is a balance bike?
A balance bike is a bike with two wheels that does not have pedals. The first known balance bike was actually invented in Europe back in the 1800's. The purpose of a balance bike is to teach children the art of balance and steering without the distraction of having to pedal. Riders are propelled forward by pushing off the ground with their feet in a running or striding motion. Once balance is achieved in this format, the transition to a pedal bike is quite fluid.

How do I decide between a metal and wooden balance bike?
Metal balance bikes are a really good choice for children who want to off-road and who are more likely to be riding in all types of weather. They can also be a more lightweight option. For the more ecological customer, some wooden bikes, such as those in the Wishbone and Foot Cycles lines, are made from preservative-free, sustainable and organic materials. Wooden bikes also have a more natural look and feel. Both types of balance bike are an excellent way to get your child out and riding, so personal preference plays a large part in this choice!

Do balance bikes have brakes? How does a child stop on a balance bike and control speed?
Most of the balance bikes that we carry do not have brakes. Research indicates that whether or not a bike has brakes, children will resort to using their feet to stop when in a critical situation. The best way for a child to control speed on a balance bike is to use his/her feet. Gripping a hand brake in addition to the handle bar is also extremely difficult for small children (and small hands!). For the more advanced rider, some brands such as Strider, offer a foot-operated, rear friction brake.

My child is tall for his age, which bike would you recommend?
The seat height of a balance bike plays a large part in a child's success at riding it. The child should sit on the seat so that the balls of his feet are touching the ground. Look for a balance bike that comes with an XL seat post, that reaches up to 18” off the ground. We recommend Foot Cycles (wood) or Strider (metal - XL seat post available).

For what age group are balance bikes intended?

Children ages 1-5 will benefit most from balance bikes.

Can the seat height be adjusted on balance bikes?

Yes! Most of the brands that we carry have adjustable seats that can be extended up to 18”. Kiddimoto seats are not adjustable, however, children are encouraged to sit up higher on the curved seat for the best possible fit.

What type of assembly is necessary?

Assembly is very basic and should take between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the brand you choose.

How much do balance bikes generally weigh?

The bikes we carry weigh between 6.9 and about 11 pounds making them easy to transport.

What type of tires do balance bikes have?

Tires are either puncture proof EVA Polymer (solid rubber) or pneumatic (air filled) smoother ride! Most are 12 inch in diameter.

How do I know when my child is ready for a two-wheeler with pedals?

Your child is ready to move on from his balance bike when he can coast with his feet in the air, move his balance bike quickly and efficiently with powerful strides and navigate obstacles with ease. However, don't be surprised if your child learns to ride a pedal bike but still chooses to fly around on his balance bike. Ours does!

My child has been riding a bike with training wheels but now we are thinking of getting him a balance bike. Will this be confusing?

No! It will be a relief! Research shows that training wheels actually inhibit the development of balance on a bike. You will be surprised at how fast your little one takes to a balance bike and develops the skills necessary to ride it with confidence.

How early can a child begin to ride a balance bike?

Amazingly, children as young as 1 begin to show interest in balance bikes (check out our 3 in 1 bike by Wishbone for the one year olds!). Children less than two years of age are able to fully ride balance bikes with ease.
